The three islands that make up the Gili Islands are Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, northwest of Lombok. Gili actually means 'small island' and that is exactly what they are. All three of them are ringed with vivid coral reefs and overwhelmed with tropical reef fish, turtles and sharks. Novice divers will be treated here as most reefs are shallow coral dives. There are some deeper walls and drift dives which should suit advanced divers but on general it is coral diving at its best.

There are simple resorts and bungalows on the island but don't expect to find a lot of fancy resorts; for that you should stay at Senggigi Beach. There are no cars on the island which make them quiet and extremely relaxing. If you still want to have some fun in the evening, we suggest going to Gili Trawangan which has a few bars and nightclubs. Gili Meno is probably the quietest and offers bird lovers a sight at its small bird park. All islands have turtles nesting on the islands which are treated with respect, but Gili Air even has a small turtle hatchery for hawksbill and green turtles, which can be visited. The best time to visit these islands is from February to November as the other two month are swept by monsoons and reduce visibilities to less than ten meters.
