Rote Island or Pulau Rote is a large and relatively unexplored island in the Lesser Sunda Islands in the south of East Nusa Tengarra province with fantastic dive potential. Offshore islands, an expansive coastline, pristine white sanded beaches, bright shallow coral reefs and deeper drop-offs in current rich channels. Whether you are a novice scuba diver interested in doing some fresh ups or reeffish-identification diving, or a professional interested in drift diving with some of the larger creatures on earth such as sharks, mantarays and whalesharks, it is all here.
Besides scuba divers, the island is also popular by surfers because of the southeastern swell providing huge waves. This generally occurs in dry season between May and September. If you feel like not relaxing for a day, you can find plenty of things to do. Enjoy the easygoing life of the local, mainly Christian community, go bush walking or join one of the available bird or eco tours. It is an upcoming paradise with very nice and luxury types of resorts.
