Ambon has only opened up for diving tourism since the late nineties. Tourist weren't planning holidays to Ambon because of its ethnic violence. The Island is only fifty kilometers across and is divided in the two regions Leitimor Peninsular and Hitoe. Interesting things to do are hiking to the two highest mountains Wawani and Salahutu, visiting one of its many hot springs or joining tours to the many stalactite caves near the porous shores of Amboyna Bay, Leitimor.
The best time to dive around Ambon is from September to May since during those months all dive sites are accessible. Since monsoon winds are coming from the south, the southern dive sites of Ambon are rough and harder to reach out of season. Its marine life is extremely rich and sightings of rhinopious, wasp fish, frogfish and many different colorful nudibranches are common. Some of the named well known dive sites around Ambon are Singa Laut, the Twilight Zone in Laha and Pula Tiga.
