The islands Waigeo, Salawati and Batanta are three of the better known tropical rainforest islands inside the Raya Ampat group. They are the three large islands first reached when you are sailing through the Dampier Strait coming from Irian Jaya's mainland town Sorong. These beautiful green islands are not only known for its stunning rich underwater world but also for its endemic bird species, plants and animal life. Steep and high mountains, plunging cliffs and an interior of tropical hardwood have attracted adventurous travelers for years. Its mainly unspoilt forests intermix with turquoise lagoons and fantastic bays.

Waigeo Island, also spelled Pulau Waigeo, Amberi and Waigeu, has a few Papuan settlements such as Wasai, Saonek and Wakre and is recently explored for its pearl farm potential. Batanta and Salawati are two islands almost connected with mainland Irian Jaya. The islands east of Sorong offer a scuba diving destination seen nowhere else in the world. Such diversity, crowded with fish and critters, rich soft corals and it is common to be the first and only divers who dive that particular spot for weeks.
